Lahmeyer International, a German consultant company selected Aquaterra as a software product for different water-related projects, such as irrigation systems, river engineering, flood protection and hydraulic structure design. Aquaterra was selected among other software products because of full support of Autodesk platforms, simplicity of use, integrated interfaces to external, world-wide used hydraulic computation programs, and ease of integration into their workflow. With Aquaterra, the company also expects to gaineasier and accurate data transfer between the engineers and technicians, who are responsible for the preparation of technical drawings.

Among other projects, Lahmeyer International currently uses Aquaterra for the extensive Merowe Irrigation Project in northern Sudan. The main canal will take water from the Nile River and will run for more than 300 km along the river to irrigate fields in the surrounding areas. This project is the irrigation component of the Merowe/Hamadab Dam Project, the largest hydropower project that is currently being developed in Africa. Once it is completed, a dam with a height of 67 meters on the fourth cataract of the Nile in North Sudan will create a reservoir with a length of 174 kilometres and a surface area of 476 square kilometres. The total cost of the Merowe Project is budgeted to reach $1.2 billion, funded by the Sudanese government, the China Export Import Bank, the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, and the Development Funds of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and the Sultanate of Oman.
